Brickwall 3 – Michael Fitzpatrick

Michael Fitzpatrick who are you?  Where did you come from?  How did you get here? And where did you go?  So many questions and so few answers.

Michael Fitzpatrick was born in Ireland (possibly Dublin) about 1827.  The first record I have found for Michael is his marriage to Margaret Kelly on 26 July 1861 at Waugoola N.S.W.  He and Margaret had 16 children, between 1862 and 1883, including two sets of twins, but I have only been able to find 10 of the children.

Their first child was born in 1862 at Hovell’s Creek N.S.W.  He was registered as Phillip, but was to be known as James Thomas (the first reference to him as James is on his brother’s birth certificate in 1865).  Why Phillip’s name was changed to James is unknown.  Certainly, There was a Phillip Cunningham who was a friend of the Kelly family, he came out on the same convict ship with Henry Kelly (Margaret’s father), and is listed on various certificates as a witness.  The witness listed for Phillip’s birth is “Mrs Cunningham”.  Michael registered the birth.    He gave his place of birth as Dublin, his age as 35 and his occupation as a stockman.  Other children were:

  • Henry (1865 – 1949)
  • William (1868-1919)
  • Unknown male (born after 1868 and died before 1872)
  • Elizabeth (1870-1956) my Gt Grandmother
  • Unknown male (born after 1870 and died before 1872)
  • Michael (1872 – ?)
  • Unknown male (born after 1874)
  • Unknown male (born after 1874)
  • Margaret Jeanette (1877 – ?)
  • Unknown male (born after 1877)
  • Unknown female (born after 1877)
  • Robert Alexander (1880 – ?)
  • Louisa Ann (1880 – died before 1883)
  • John Alfred (1883 – 1965)
  • Louisa Martha Margaret (1883 – 1887)

Details on unknown children are based on information on birth certificates of other siblings.  Unfortunately, details of other siblings were only given on the birth certificates of Phillip (James) and Henry, on the other certificates the informant (usually Michael) gave the number of boys alive, girls alive, boys dead and girls dead.  All of the children were born in Central West N.S.W.

The births of the last set of twins (John and Louisa) was not registered.  I have not been able to find what happened to Michael and his wife Margaret, but by 1887  the younger Fitzpatrick children were living in Oberon with Margaret’s sister (Ann Artery).  John and Louisa were baptised in 1887, with Ann and William Artery listed as guardians.
